Owen Stowe: Bitmap

A project completed for design studies two, a class for my undergraduate art studies. The first image is a plot of grass behind the Cummings Arts Center. In this version, the image resolution was reduced to 3 by 4 pixels. This grid, along with the 8-bit binary RGB values, was superimposed on the physical plot of grass, mapping the bits to the physical plane and reconnecting the image to its source.

Artist's statement: Humans take digital photographs by the thousands then upload and manipulate them on computers. Photographs no longer require a reality on which to be based. The screen represents images using a massive grid of pixels, which are comprised of three elements: red, green, and blue. The computer assigns these elements values between 0 and 255, which in turn dictate the perceived color of a pixel. At the lowest level of computer architecture, called machine code, these values are represented with 8 binary digits (or bits).
